The Pants

Updated: Oct 18, 2019

When I was in high school I had a pair of leopard print jeans. They were fun and looked good on me and I enjoyed wearing them. Then the girls in the grade above started putting me down for wearing the pants. They said they were “too much” and “showy” and “who did I think I was?” The pants became a big topic of gossip and so I stopped wearing them. For decades now I have unconsciously been monitoring my clothing choices, amongst other things, by measuring what would be the least offensive to others or not perceived as “too much”. The other day, I tried on a pair of sparkly leggings for yoga and although I loved them I put them back on the shelf and bought plain black ones instead. Then I read something that hit home…”Unfuck yourself. Be who you were before all that stuff happened that dimmed your fucking shine.” Right at that moment I realized what I had been doing. The life journey is all about unfucking yourself. Layer by layer, shedding what is dimming your fucking shine.

So I went back and bought the sparkly pants and I am wearing them. How about you?
